Uber and Pony.ai Are Bringing More Than 2,000 Robotaxis to Europe
Uber has expanded its partnership with China's Pony.ai. The rollout starts from Zagreb, Croatia and extends to four more European cities. The cities have not been named.
Uber and Pony.ai, one of China's largest autonomous driving companies, announced an expansion of their strategic partnership to deploy more than 2,000 robotaxis across Europe.
Starting point: Zagreb
The existing service in Zagreb, Croatia launched in late March and is, by both companies' claim, the first commercial robotics service of its kind in Europe. Its legal frame is the EU AI Act that entered enforcement in August.
Until now it operated separately from the Uber app. That changes: riders will be able to hail a Pony.ai robotaxi directly through Uber.
Four more European cities follow Zagreb. Neither company has said which ones, or on what timeline.
Division of labor
The structure is straightforward. Pony.ai brings its L4 autonomous driving technology, rider experience and the operational knowledge it accumulated across earlier large-scale deployments.
Uber brings what would take an autonomous-vehicle company years to build: customer reach, booking, payments and support.
Why it matters
The interesting part is geography. Until now the robotaxi race has been effectively an American and Chinese contest. Europe lagged, largely because its regulatory environment is stricter.
A Chinese company entering Europe through Croatia shows the path in does not necessarily run through Germany or France.
The other side is equally notable: Uber does not build autonomous vehicles. Its strategy is to own the demand layer and let whoever built the technology ride on top of it.
A Middle East deployment is part of the same agreement, though details have not been released. 🚀
